Project Spotlight: French Broad Bend Residence

Project Spotlight: French Broad Bend Residence | Location: French Broad Crossing
Architect: Platt | Builder: Tyner Construction Co. | Photographer: Tzu Chen Photography
Designed by Platt Architecture, French Broad Bend is a custom luxury residence set along the French Broad River, carefully shaped by its dramatic natural surroundings. The home is sited to take full advantage of long river views, seasonal landscape changes, and the quiet privacy of its wooded setting.
A defining feature of the design is its extensive use of glass, with large-format windows and doors playing a central role in the architectural expression. Supplied by Eurostar Fenestration, these systems help dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the home to feel open to the landscape while still maintaining comfort, performance, and control.
The fenestration package supports several key project goals:
- Expansive Views & Daylight: Large openings maximize natural light throughout the home and frame curated views of the river and surrounding terrain, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day and enhancing the experience of each space.
- Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living: Operable door systems create strong physical and visual connections to outdoor living areas, terraces, and the natural riverfront environment, extending usable living space beyond the interior walls.
- High Performance Envelope: The window and door systems contribute to overall building performance, supporting thermal efficiency, air and water infiltration resistance, and occupant comfort in a four-season climate.
- Architectural Clarity: Slim sightlines and clean detailing allow the architecture to remain visually dominant, ensuring that glazing enhances rather than competes with the material palette of stone, wood, and steel.
- Comfort & Control: Despite the large glass expanses, the systems provide reliable environmental separation—helping maintain interior comfort, reduce drafts, and support energy-conscious design strategies.
The result is a residence that feels both open and protected—immersed in its setting while still offering the refinement and performance expected in a high-end custom home. Every opening is carefully considered, reinforcing Platt Architecture’s intent to create a home that is deeply connected to place, light, and landscape.
